How To Generate Ebook Ideas

So you want to write an ebook but are not sure what to write about? What you choose will have an impact not only on your own writing enjoyment, but also on how successful your ebook is with consumers. Read below to learn how to come up with interesting ebook ideas, as well as reaping successful sales.

First of all, you should be aware of what an ebook is.  In case you need a refresher, here’s a brief definition of an ebook.  It isn’t really a book at all, but a document consisting of text and perhaps graphics.   It is designed to be downloaded to your computer and read from the screen. The pages may be printed out if need be, but typically it is kept on your computer and read on your computer. It differs from a traditional book in that there are no actual pages to touch, there is no binding, and no need for a bookcase in which to store it in!

Some ebooks are published on CD or as audio files.  These have the advantage of being able to be accessed in the car, by mp3 players, iphones and the family video player.  Most ebooks however, are simple digital files read from your computer.

Writing an ebook is basically like writing a traditional print book, but often people who write ebooks are writing manuals or how-to sorts of books rather than works of fine literature.   Literary ebooks are not terribly common, but with the advent of special readers such as the Kindle, the format is growing in popularity.

However, for the purpose of this article, I’m assuming that you want to write ebooks for money so unless you are very lucky or exceptionally gifted then I suggest you concentrate your efforts on writing informational ebooks for which there is an established market.

So how do you come up with a lucrative ebook idea?  Well the first thing to do is to consider the consumer, and the volume of consumers you want.   To reap a good reward from your efforts you want to have as many people download your book as possible. Therefore, you should pick an ebook idea that people are interested in learning more about.

To find ideas, look at the popular magazines on newsstands and in the local grocery store. What are some common topics found in these magazines? Likely, you will find many articles on how to lose weight or how to save money, among other popular titles. Take note from the repeating headlines that you see. Magazines make sure they write about things people are interested in. It would be wise to choose one of these ideas, do some research, and write about that.

Going back to magazines, do be careful when considering weight loss and saving money subjects.  These are hugely popular topics which all ready have saturated markets.  To be really successful in these topics you will need to come up with a unique angle.  If you don’t think you can do that, look for a less popular niche, but one that still has a good following.

There’s also the theory about writing what you know. Obviously, we are experts in what we know, so we could write good ebooks on those ebook ideas and these would be the most helpful to readers. It is also important to note that if you are writing about something you are interested in, the process of writing will seem less like work and more like fun!  Take a close look at your hobbies and interests and ask yourself a few questions.  Is my hobby followed by a lot of people?  Are there aspects of it that some people find difficult or confusing?  Could I write an ebook on this topic to really speed up the learning process or make the reader more accomplished at this activity?

In short, be sure you are writing about something you are passionate about, or at least somewhat interested in. This is especially true for your first ebook.  If making a lot of sales is important to you, be sure to take note of popular topics and look for a unique selling point.

Finally, you should always ensure your writing is appropriate for your target audience.  A friendly, but informative approach is usually appropriate in most cases and it goes without saying, it should be free from grammatical and spelling errors.

If you think you might need a little help with grammar or writing non-fiction articles then you would be wise to brush up your skills.
